Pendock provides column casings for Castle School canteen refurbishment
Few indoor spaces present a more challenging environment than a school canteen, which was one of the reasons the design team responsible for a far-reaching refurbishment programme, recently completed within ageing premises close to Scotland’s second city, elected to install six bespoke column casings produced by encasement specialist, Pendock Limited. Mearns Castle School, located on Waterfoot Road in Newton Mearns near Glasgow, has undergone a full interior refit as well as other works by Marshall Construction, with Advanced Refurbishment Ltd. the contractor undertaking the installation of the half dozen, laminate column surrounds.
The successful secondary school, established back in 1778, is constantly investing in both the delivery of its curriculum and its facilities: with the canteen being used by hundreds of students every day of term. East Renfrewshire Council, the architectural consultancy leading the refit programme, was keen that the existing load-carrying columns should be unified by the completed works. Thus the various different sizes and finishes of reinforced concrete stanchion have all now been covered by the 590mm wide x 450 mm deep column casings; each one approximately 2600 mm tall. Their sectional design allows them to be quickly and easily assembled on site, before being screw fixed into battens secured against the existing columns. The fixings are concealed by feature joint details running the height of the columns while a painted metal perimeter angle at the top of each column supports the ceiling, neatening the interface.
